Which credit bureau is the toughest?
Of the three main credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), none is considered better than the others. A lender may rely on a report from one bureau or all three bureaus to make its decisions about approving a loan.
With Experian being the largest credit bureau, many people wonder how accurate the Experian credit score is. Much like the scoring models, your score is equally accurate with each of the individual bureaus based on the information reported to your credit report for that bureau.
Neither your TransUnion or Equifax score is more or less accurate than the other. They're just calculated from slightly differing sources. Your Equifax credit score is likely lower due to reporting differences. Nonetheless, a “fair” score from TransUnion is typically “fair” across the board.
FICO scores are generally known to be the most widely used by lenders. But the credit-scoring model used may vary by lender. While FICO Score 8 is the most common, mortgage lenders might use FICO Score 2, 4 or 5. Auto lenders often use one of the FICO Auto Scores.
Most credit scores that lenders use in the United States range from 300 to 850. And when people talk about achieving the “highest” credit score possible, they're usually talking about the ever-elusive 850 FICO® Score. Earning a perfect 850 FICO Score isn't common, but it's certainly possible.
Lenders use all three major credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, at their discretion to help determine a consumer's or entity's creditworthiness. In addition to reviewing information provided by the bureaus, lenders report customer data to them.
For the majority of lending decisions most lenders use your FICO score. Calculated by the data analytics company Fair Isaac Corporation, it's based on data from credit reports about your payment history, credit mix, length of credit history and other criteria.
As someone with a 650 credit score, you are firmly in the “fair” territory of credit. You can usually qualify for financial products like a mortgage or car loan, but you will likely pay higher interest rates than someone with a better credit score. The "good" credit range starts at 690.
The two most widely used credit scoring models, FICO and VantageScore, range from 300 to 850, making 300 the lowest credit score possible. FICO and VantageScore give high credit scores to consumers deemed as lower-risk borrowers, and lower scores to high-risk borrowers.
Some types of mortgages have specific minimum credit score requirements. A conventional loan requires a credit score of at least 620, but it's ideal to have a score of 740 or above, which could allow you to make a lower down payment, get a more attractive interest rate and save on private mortgage insurance.
What credit score is needed to buy a house?
The minimum credit score needed for most mortgages is typically around 620. However, government-backed mortgages like Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans typically have lower credit requirements than conventional fixed-rate loans and adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs).
The Three Bureaus and FICO
For example, an apartment manager who checks your credit may only look at Experian while a credit card company might only look at TransUnion. FICO was developed as an alternative to these bureaus. Many lenders prefer FICO because it paints a more holistic picture of the potential borrower.
The average FICO credit score in the US is 718, according to the latest FICO data from April 2023. The average VantageScore is 701 as of January 2024. Credit scores, which are like a grade for your borrowing history, fall in the range of 300 to 850.
It's exceedingly rare for anyone to have a credit score over 900, as most credit scoring models have a maximum limit of 850, and even achieving that score is uncommon.
While older models of credit scores used to go as high as 900, you can no longer achieve a 900 credit score. The highest score you can receive today is 850. Anything above 800 is considered an excellent credit score.
Discover provides your FICO® Score 8, which is one of the company's most widely used scoring models, according to FICO. Lenders use several different kinds of FICO® Scores, depending on the type of loan they provide. Discover provides your score from data on your TransUnion® credit report.
American Express uses all three major credit bureaus: TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Either one or more credit bureaus may be used when evaluating am American Express credit card application. Credit reports, however, don't differ that much from bureau to bureau.
Discover may pull from any of three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, but it appears based on consumer-reported data the bank leans heavily on Equifax to source many credit reports, followed by Experian and TransUnion.
The required credit score to buy a $300K house typically ranges from 580 to 720 or higher, depending on the type of loan. For an FHA loan, the minimum credit score is usually around 580.
You'll usually need a credit score of at least 640 for the zero-down USDA loan program. VA loans with no money down usually require a minimum credit score of 580 to 620. Low-down-payment mortgages, including conforming loans and FHA loans, also require FICO scores of 580 to 620.
What credit score is needed to buy a car?
The credit score required and other eligibility factors for buying a car vary by lender and loan terms. Still, you typically need a good credit score of 661 or higher to qualify for an auto loan. About 69% of retail vehicle financing is for borrowers with credit scores of 661 or higher, according to Experian.
For instance, major credit bureaus frequently use the FICO score and VantageScore credit assessment models. However, users have often reported that their TransUnion score is usually lower than other credit scores. That is because the TransUnion credit scoring model is usually stricter than other ones.
If you want to improve your score, there are some things you can do, including: Paying your loans on time. Not getting too close to your credit limit. Having a long credit history.
TransUnion vs. Equifax: Which is most accurate? No credit score from any one of the credit bureaus is more valuable or more accurate than another. It's possible that a lender may gravitate toward one score over another, but that doesn't necessarily mean that score is better.
